DIY Yoga Mat Cleaner Recipe: How to Clean a Yoga Mat Effectively

Like any surface we repeatedly touch, a yoga mat can accumulate dirt, germs and bacteria that can, in turn, lead to bigger problems, like infections and plantar warts. If you share a yoga mat at a studio, disinfecting your yoga mat for every session is essential, because viruses and bacteria can spread on shared surfaces. Even if you only do a gentle at-home practice, cleaning your yoga mat regularly can help prevent skin issues like acne and improve the overall cleanliness of your home.

Most yoga studios and fitness centers will offer powerful disinfectant wipes to clean your yoga mat. If you’re borrowing a shared yoga mat, it’s important to clean your mat both before and after you use it, to ensure you’re fully protected from germs.

You can also create your own DIY yoga mat cleaner for your personal yoga mat. Add the following ingredients to a spray bottle for a low-cost, effective, all-natural yoga mat cleaner.

  • Add 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water.
  • Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil, such as tea tree or lavender.
  • Cap and shake up the bottle.
  • Spray the entire mat.
  • Use a soft, clean, dry towel to rub the cleaner into the mat.
  • Dry, then flip the mat. Repeat.

You can also use a simple combination of your favorite dish soap and warm water to gently scrub your mat.

Be mindful of the ingredients in your cleaning solution, as the American Lung Association reports chemical-filled cleaners can contribute to respiratory issues, headaches and allergic reactions. Making your own natural cleaner, with a scent you love, makes cleaning your yoga mat more enjoyable and safer for your overall health.

How Often Should You Clean Your Yoga Mat?

Clean your personal yoga mat as often as you’d like, depending on the level of dirt and grime that accumulates on it. If you’re only doing non-heated yoga at home, you may not need to clean your yoga mat as often as you would if you’re taking your personal yoga mat to a hot yoga studio.

If you’re sharing or borrowing a yoga mat, clean it before and after you use it for maximum protection. Use whatever materials the studio provides to disinfect the yoga mat. Wash your hands thoroughly after to prevent an allergic reaction to the cleaner.

  1. […] One way you can set yourself up for injury in yoga is to try to out-do those around you, or even go further than what your instructor is guiding you towards. Take comfort in the fact that most people aren’t paying as much attention to you as you are yourself. The “spotlight effect” makes us think people are noticing us more than they actually are. There’s no need to worry about anything that’s happening outside of your own yoga mat. […]
